In today's tech news: Microsoft, JP MorganChase, and a consortium including Alphabet, Meta, Shopify, and Stripe are making multimillion-dollar investments in bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). These companies are funding paper mill owners to install carbon scrubbing equipment, capturing hundreds of thousands of tons of CO2, which will then be piped into saline aquifers for permanent sequestration. Experts, however, have raised concerns about this controversial carbon removal tactic. Also in climate tech, Kairos Power is developing next-generation nuclear reactors that promise reliable, 24/7 decarbonized power. Unlike most nuclear startups, Kairos already has prototypes under construction and permits for several reactors. The company uses molten salt for cooling and heat transfer, aiming for commercial reactors that are cost-competitive with natural gas and safer than conventional reactors.
