The Download: Space Debris Risk Rises; AI Chatbots Combat Conspiracy Theories

Welcome to The Download, your daily briefing on the world of technology.
Space Debris Risk on the Rise
The risk of flights being hit by space junk remains small but is growing. The European Space Agency estimates about three pieces of old space equipment fall into Earth’s atmosphere daily. By the mid-2030s, this could increase due to the rise of megaconstellations in orbit.
While no injuries have been reported from space debris, some estimates suggest a 10% annual risk of a single human death or injury from space debris strikes on the ground by 2035. This translates to a better-than-even chance that someone on Earth will be hit by space junk roughly every decade.
AI Chatbots Debunking Conspiracy Theories
Contrary to popular belief, many conspiracy theorists are receptive to evidence and arguments. Research indicates that AI chatbots, capable of delivering tailored conversations, can effectively debunk conspiracy theories.
This is promising, given the significant role conspiracy theories play in today's political landscape. While generative AI raises concerns about spreading disinformation, it can also be part of the solution.
