Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing education, but students are increasingly concerned about its impact on their study skills. A new study by the Oxford University Press (OUP) reveals that while AI is widely used in classrooms, many students believe it may be hindering their ability to develop essential learning and creative thinking skills.
The OUP study found that 80% of UK students aged 13–18 regularly use AI for schoolwork. However, 62% of these students feel that AI negatively affects their skill development. Specific concerns include the over-reliance on AI for answers, which may make learning too easy, and the potential limitation of creative thinking.
AI's Rising Popularity in Schools
AI has become a staple in modern education. According to the OUP study, only 2% of students avoid using AI tools entirely. This widespread adoption reflects the growing integration of AI into classroom activities, from homework assistance to research projects. However, the convenience of AI tools comes with a cost, as students and educators begin to question their long-term effects on learning.
Negative Impacts on Skill Development
One in four students surveyed believe that AI makes finding answers too easy, which could hinder their learning process. Additionally, 12% worry that AI limits their creative thinking. Alexandra Tomescu, a generative AI specialist at OUP, noted that students are aware of these pitfalls. "Sixty percent of students are concerned that AI encourages copying rather than original work," she said. "This shows a mature understanding of the technology's role in education.".
Student Concerns About Over-Reliance
The fear of over-reliance on AI is a recurring theme among students. Nearly half of the 2,000 students surveyed expressed worry about their classmates secretly using AI. Many students seek more guidance from teachers on how to use AI appropriately and judge its reliability. Daniel Williams, an assistant headteacher, echoed these concerns, stating, "While students recognize AI's value, they often use it as a shortcut rather than a learning tool.".
MIT Study Echoes Concerns
The OUP findings align with other research. An MIT study measuring brain activity during essay writing found that over-reliance on AI raises concerns about long-term educational implications. The study suggests that while AI can assist in certain tasks, it may also inhibit the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Desire for Teacher Guidance
Students are not alone in their concerns. Teachers are also grappling with how to integrate AI into the classroom effectively. Many educators agree that AI can be a valuable tool, but it must be used responsibly. "Teachers need to guide students in understanding when and how to use AI," said Williams. "It's about finding the right balance.".
The Upsides of AI Use
Despite the concerns, 31% of students believe that AI does not negatively impact their skills. Many report gaining new abilities, such as better problem-solving and idea generation. One 15-year-old girl shared that AI helped her understand and solve difficult math problems, while a 14-year-old boy claimed it made him think faster. These positive experiences highlight the potential benefits of AI when used thoughtfully.
OUP Launches AI Education Hub
To address these issues, OUP is launching an AI education hub to support teachers. This initiative aims to help educators guide students in the productive use of AI. The hub will provide resources and training to ensure that AI is used as a tool for learning rather than a crutch.
