AI Impact on Enterprise Environmental Performance

Worldwide, stakeholders increasingly value the environmental performance of enterprises. Artificial intelligence is seen as a crucial technology in reshaping companies and promoting broader macroeconomic sustainability.
A study, using the “National New Generation Artificial Intelligence Innovation Development Pilot Zone” as a quasi-natural experiment, analyzed data from China’s A-share listed companies between 2009 and 2022 to understand how AI development affects corporate environmental performance and its mechanisms.
Key Findings
The research indicated that AI development improves corporate environmental performance. It also showed that AI enhances environmental performance by aiding market integration and fostering corporate green innovation.
Heterogeneity Analysis
The positive impact of AI development on corporate ecological performance was more evident in non-heavy-polluting and capital-intensive industries.
