AI in Education: A Growing Trend

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a vital tool in education, helping students and employees adapt to a rapidly changing world. AI tools like ChatGPT and Notion are increasingly being used for tasks such as writing, math, and note-taking, while educational institutions are integrating AI into their curriculums to prepare students for the future.

An executive order, titled ‘Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education For American Youth,’ has integrated AI into the core curriculum for grades K-12. The goal is to develop students' AI knowledge and foster independent thinking. Research suggests that AI can help students become more autonomous learners, equipped with the skills needed to navigate an AI-driven world.

The Growth of AI Since 2020

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of AI in education has accelerated. Initially, students relied on tools like Duolingo and Grammarly while learning from home. A survey found that 27% of students regularly used AI tools, compared to just 9% of teachers. Educators are now focusing on teaching the correct use of AI technology and emphasizing its advantages in the classroom.

AI is being used for self-reflection and feedback, ensuring clarity and consistency across student comments. This application of AI helps students improve their work and develop critical thinking skills. Educators believe that AI can enhance the learning experience by providing personalized feedback and support.

AI at Fullerton College

Fullerton College is at the forefront of AI integration in education. The college will offer AI classes, such as Business 256 F – Artificial Intelligence and Prompt Engineering for Business, starting in fall 2025. Business professor Gary Graves will teach some of these classes, incorporating AI to reflect the evolving world and prepare students for the workforce.

In 2026, Fullerton College plans to launch three new AI programs, including two certificates and an associate degree. However, not everyone agrees with the use of AI in classrooms. Second-year student Ollie Gomez, who used AI for psychology homework, believes it defeats the purpose of having a professor. Despite the debate, the full impact of AI in education remains to be seen.

The integration of AI in education may create tension for teachers but aims to provide students with the independence and skills needed for the workforce. Gary Graves, who has developed new AI-driven learning tools and custom AI chatbots, believes there is no limit to what can be achieved with AI. As AI continues to evolve, its role in education will likely become even more significant, shaping the future of learning and workforce preparation.
