AI in Healthcare: Europe's Push for Responsible Innovation

The Role of AI in Europe’s Healthcare Transformation

Europe is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare, with a strong emphasis on responsible innovation. The recent ESC Digital & AI Summit 2025 highlighted the collaborative efforts between global leaders, healthcare innovators, and experts to advance digital transformation in the sector. The summit underscored the importance of AI in improving healthcare delivery, accelerating research, and enhancing patient outcomes, while ensuring transparency, safety, and ethical integrity.

The European Health Data Space (EHDS) is a cornerstone initiative aimed at enabling secure and responsible use of health data across Europe. By promoting cross-border data exchange, EHDS aims to improve healthcare delivery, strengthen cardiovascular health, and enhance outcomes for individual patients. The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) plays a critical role in supporting EHDS implementation by sharing cardiovascular expertise with EU institutions and advocating for harmonised, clinician-driven approaches.

Key Initiatives Driving AI in Healthcare

Several initiatives are spearheading the integration of AI in healthcare. AI4HF, for instance, harnesses AI to provide personalised risk assessment and care plans for individuals with chronic heart failure. This initiative leverages advanced AI algorithms, global collaboration, and a patient-centred approach to improve healthcare outcomes. Similarly, DataTools4Heart aims to create a comprehensive cardiology data toolbox for clinicians, researchers, and data scientists, enabling data ingestion, harmonisation, natural language processing, and federated machine learning.

Another notable initiative is GREG, which unites 29 partner organisations to advance real-world evidence practices for the development and evaluation of medicines and medical devices in Europe. These initiatives collectively highlight Europe’s commitment to leveraging AI for better healthcare while ensuring ethical and responsible use.

The European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act, in force since summer 2024, is a landmark regulation shaping AI use across sectors, including healthcare. While comprehensive, it leaves key questions open, such as data quality, algorithm validation, and medical liability. Addressing these gaps is essential for safe and effective clinical adoption of AI.

The ESC is actively engaged in shaping the future of AI in healthcare. Through continuous dialogue with regulators, the ESC shares its community’s expertise on the opportunities and risks of AI in research and clinical practice. This engagement ensures that AI in healthcare remains responsible, patient-centred, and ethical, while empowering healthcare professionals to harness its potential safely and effectively.
