AKRON, Ohio – This week, the University of Akron announced the launch of a new Bachelor of Business Administration Degree focused on Applied Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems. According to a university news release, this new degree program arrives as the demand increases for graduates capable of connecting emerging technology with business operations.

The university’s new degree program seeks to help students find a balance between data, strategy, and technology. It also intends to give graduates a technical understanding of AI, teaching them how to use it responsibly and effectively.

According to College of Business Associate Dean Debmalya Mukherjee in the release, “AI is fundamentally transforming the way businesses operate and compete. Equipping our students with applied AI skills directly aligns with the University of Akron College of Business motto, Experience Business.”

Program Focus

The program moves beyond only coding and software development, putting its attention on connecting business applications with applied technical instruction. The release notes that program highlights include machine learning, deep learning, data provisioning, and AI-driven decision making.

Curriculum

“This is about preparing students for the future of work,” said Dr., Professor and Chair of the Department of Management Erin Makarius in the release. “Companies need graduates who can understand AI’s capabilities, communicate its value to decision-makers and implement solutions responsibly. Our students will leave with the skills to bridge that gap between business and technology.”

Through internships, industry partnerships, real-world projects, and hands-on learning, the program will assist students in combining classroom learning with professional experience. According to the release, program graduates will be prepared for careers in entrepreneurship, information technology and systems management, business intelligence, and AI-focused roles across various industries.

The introductory class will be available in the upcoming spring semester, with the program officially beginning in the fall of 2026, according to the university.
