University of Akron Launches AI Business Degree

The University of Akron has introduced a new Bachelor of Business Administration degree focused on Applied Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems. This innovative program is designed to meet the growing demand for graduates who can effectively integrate emerging technologies, such as AI, into modern business operations.

The degree aims to provide students with a balanced understanding of data, strategy, and technology, while also instilling a responsible and effective approach to AI implementation. According to the university, this program goes beyond traditional coding and software development, focusing instead on the practical application of AI in business contexts.

Program Focus: Bridging Business and Technology

The AI Business Degree at the University of Akron emphasizes the connection between business applications and applied technical instruction. Key areas of focus include machine learning, deep learning, data provisioning, and AI-driven decision-making. These topics are chosen to prepare students for the evolving landscape of technology-driven industries.

"AI is fundamentally transforming the way businesses operate and compete," said Debmalya Mukherjee, Associate Dean of the College of Business. "By equipping our students with applied AI skills, we are aligning with our motto, 'Experience Business,' and preparing them for the future of work."

Curriculum and Real-World Experience

The program’s curriculum is designed to go beyond theoretical knowledge. Through internships, industry partnerships, real-world projects, and hands-on learning, students will gain practical experience that complements classroom instruction. This approach ensures that graduates are prepared to implement AI solutions responsibly and effectively in professional settings.

"This is about preparing students for the future of work," said Dr. Erin Makarius, Professor and Chair of the Department of Management. "Companies need graduates who can understand AI’s capabilities, communicate its value to decision-makers, and implement solutions responsibly. Our students will leave with the skills to bridge the gap between business and technology."

Career Prospects and Program Timeline

Graduates of the program will be well-positioned for careers in entrepreneurship, information technology and systems management, business intelligence, and AI-focused roles across various industries. The university has announced that the introductory class will be available in the upcoming spring semester, with the full program officially beginning in the fall of 2026.
