Androidify App Returns with Gemini AI
Source: howtogeek.com
Fourteen years ago, Google introduced Androidify, an app that let you create a personalized 2D Android robot. After updates and removals, it's back, now using Gemini AI.
The app was removed from the Play Store in 2020 after being inactive for some time. Last year, Androidify returned with a 3D robot and more customization options. At Google I/O 2025, a major update was announced: instead of manual customization, AI creates the robot from a photo.
Google's I/O 2025 keynote included a demo of Android XR glasses with Gemini-powered translation, navigation, and messaging. While the showcase was interesting, hands-on use of the glasses was more impressive.
The process is simple: take a new photo or use one from your gallery (selfie or full-body). Then, choose the robot color and wait about a minute for the image to generate. Results vary; sometimes they're accurate, sometimes not.
Impressive Results
Some results were impressive. One image matched my hair, shirt, and pants accurately. Another recreated outfits for multiple people. One image accurately generated the graduation stole and cap tassel.
Mixed Results
Other results had some issues. One image recreated a tie-dyed shirt well, but the beard was below the robot's neckline, which happened often. A group photo with props yielded okay results, but the figures looked more like Barbie dolls than robots, and only one was green, indicating Gemini struggled with the complexity.
Overall, the app is mostly accurate and fun to use. I do miss the customization of previous versions where you could change clothes and add items. Now, it's limited to what you wear in the photo.
One missing feature is support for animals; the app wouldn't process a photo of my dog.
Androidify is a small part of the Gemini AI features announced at Google I/O. Google is also using Gemini to generate images of you wearing clothes from Google Shopping. They also showed Android XR glasses with Gemini, a $250/month "Ultra" Gemini subscription, NotebookLM phone apps, and an AI detector.
Trying on clothes can be a pain, but it's essential for online shopping. Google is trying to combine online shopping with real-life try-ons.
This AI tool is fun but lacks some qualities of previous versions. It's easier, but you lose creative control. Is personalization the point of creating a personalized robot? AI helps us offload work, but sometimes the process matters more than the result.
The new Androidify app is currently available on Github and requires compilation. It's unclear if Google will release it on the Play Store.
