Anthropic's Claude 4 Model Family
Anthropic has introduced its Claude 4 model family, which includes Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4. Opus 4 is designed to push boundaries in coding, research, writing, and scientific discovery. Sonnet 4 is intended as an upgrade from Sonnet 3.7 for everyday use cases.
Claude Opus 4
Anthropic identifies Claude Opus 4 as its most powerful model and the best coding model. It achieved 72.5% on SWE-bench and 43.2% on Terminal-bench. Opus 4 is designed for sustained performance on tasks requiring focused effort. Anthropic claims it can work continuously for several hours, expanding what AI agents can achieve.
Claude Sonnet 4
Claude Sonnet 4 is designed to be a versatile model for a range of applications. GitHub plans to introduce it as the base model for the new coding agent in GitHub Copilot. Tech commentator Manus noted improvements in following complex instructions, clear reasoning, and aesthetic outputs. iGent reports Sonnet 4 excels at autonomous multi-feature app development, improved problem-solving, and codebase navigation—reducing navigation errors from 20% to near zero. Sourcegraph considers the model a substantial leap in software development. Augment Code has seen higher success rates and more careful work through complex tasks, making Sonnet 4 their top choice.
Hybrid Nature and Availability
Both Opus 4 and Sonnet 4 can operate in two modes: one for quick replies and another for deeper reasoning. The deeper thinking mode is available in the Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise Claude plans. Sonnet 4, complete with extended thinking, is also available to free users. Anthropic is rolling out new tools for developers on its API. Anthropic emphasizes that its Claude 4 models lead on SWE-bench Verified. The models deliver strong performance across coding, reasoning, multimodal capabilities, and agentic tasks.
Pricing and Access
Claude Opus 4 costs $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens. Claude Sonnet 4 is priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Both are available via the Anthropic API and on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI.
Anthropic is focusing on making AI more capable in coding and autonomous agent behavior.
