BU Law Adopts Harvey AI Platform
Boston University School of Law (BU Law) has formed a partnership with Harvey, a leading provider of generative AI tailored for the legal and professional sectors.
BU Law is now among 18 schools participating in Harvey’s expanded law school alliance program. Other participants include the University of Chicago Law School, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, NYU School of Law, University of Michigan Law School, Stanford Law School, and Vanderbilt Law School. This program addresses the specific needs of legal education and the growing role of AI in the legal field.
The partnership grants BU Law students, faculty, and staff access to Harvey’s platform. It will also support the school's efforts to develop course content and curricula that will prepare students to use generative AI effectively, efficiently, and ethically in the legal profession.
Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig stated that this collaboration continues BU Law’s tradition of providing students with practical experience for practice-readiness. She added that BU Law is among the first to work with Harvey to equip students with the critical thinking and tech skills needed to navigate the information landscape and provide excellent legal work.
AI to Extend Reach of Legal Services
The alliance with Harvey has the potential to expand the reach of the legal services offered by BU Law’s clinics. Students in clinics can use Harvey’s platform to save time on routine tasks, allowing them to dedicate more resources to improving client advocacy and serving more low-income clients.
BU Law’s participation in Harvey’s law school program aims to level the playing field for its students by providing access to an important AI tool and guidance on its use.
Professor Timothy Duncan, lecturer and director of BU Law’s new AI Program, explained that the goal is to ensure every graduate can use artificial intelligence wisely, ethically, and skillfully. He said that providing Harvey gives students hands-on experience with tools that are reshaping legal practice. He added that the partnership reinforces the school's commitment to integrating AI into legal education, helping its students become leaders in the profession.
New AI Certificate Program
BU Law’s AI Program is creating a new certificate in AI for Law Practice. This program will teach students how to draft legal documents and conduct legal research using AI legal tools.
Dean Onwuachi-Willig noted that the certificate will signal to employers that students are prepared for legal practice and can adapt as the profession evolves. Harvey stated that they are excited to collaborate with AI-forward institutions to enhance their ecosystem and embed generative AI in legal education.
In addition to its partnerships with law schools, Harvey collaborates with law, tax, and finance firms, including global law firms and Fortune 500 companies, to drive innovation, efficiency, and value.
