BU Law Partners with Harvey AI

Boston University School of Law (BU Law) has formed a partnership with Harvey, a leading provider of generative artificial intelligence tailored for the legal and professional sectors.

BU Law is among 18 institutions participating in Harvey’s expanded law school alliance program, which includes schools such as the University of Chicago Law School, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, NYU School of Law, University of Michigan Law School, Stanford Law School, and Vanderbilt Law School. The program addresses the growing role of AI in legal education. The partnership grants BU Law students, faculty, and staff access to the Harvey platform and supports the school’s efforts to integrate generative AI into its curriculum so students can employ it effectively, efficiently, and ethically.

Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig stated that BU Law has a tradition of offering students hands-on experience. She added that the partnership with Harvey will give students the technological skills they need to navigate the world and provide clients with top-quality legal work.

Benefits of the Partnership

The Harvey alliance can potentially expand the scope of legal services offered by BU Law’s clinics. Students in clinics can use Harvey’s platform to reduce the time spent on routine tasks, allowing them to dedicate more resources to client advocacy and serve more low-income clients.

BU Law’s participation in Harvey’s law school program aims to provide students with access to AI tools along with guidance on their use. Professor Timothy Duncan, lecturer and director of BU Law’s new AI Program, said that the goal is to ensure that every graduate is prepared to use artificial intelligence wisely and skillfully in learning and practicing law. He also said that the partnership reinforces the school's commitment to integrating AI into legal education and will help students stand out in the legal profession.

BU Law’s AI Program is developing a new certificate in AI for Law Practice, which will teach students how to draft legal documents and conduct legal research using AI legal tools. Dean Onwuachi-Willig believes the certificate will signal to employers that students are prepared for legal practice and able to adapt to changes in the profession.

Harvey stated that they are excited to work with AI-forward institutions to enhance their ecosystem and embed Generative AI in legal education.

Harvey also collaborates with leading law, tax, and finance firms to promote innovation, success, efficiency, and value.
