Comboni Sisters: A New Generation Trained in Human Rights and AI

In a world grappling with complex challenges, a new generation of missionaries is emerging. Six young women are preparing to become Comboni Sisters, focusing on social justice and technology.

A Modern Missionary Calling

The International Novitiate in Brescia, Italy, is training these women from Africa and South America. Their studies include human rights, ecology, child protection, and even artificial intelligence.

Sister Azezet Kidane emphasizes the importance of community. "Our motto is: let’s hold each other’s hand - alone we can do nothing," she says, highlighting their resilience and message of hope.

Empowering Women Globally

The Comboni Sisters prioritize the promotion of women, following their founder's teachings. Sister Maureen Mora, who previously directed a girls’ school in Mozambique, believes, "When you educate a woman, you educate a village.".

Their mission is to protect women in marginalized communities. This includes addressing exploitation and advocating for their rights.

From Global South to North

The novices' journey to Brescia is a symbolic shift, a temporary move from the Global South to the North. Here, they share their faith and serve the community, singing in choirs and assisting migrants.

Sister Maureen notes that they bring hope to everyone they meet, enriching the local Church with their vibrant faith. The experience is designed to be collaborative and egalitarian. "Each one is responsible for the others," Sister Maureen explains.

The Comboni Sisters' approach reflects a shift towards shared responsibility and integral human development. Their training equips them to address contemporary issues with a unique feminine perspective.

Sister Azezet encapsulates their mission: "Mission is wherever you are and where there is a person in need of you.". The program ensures these women are ready to be agents of change, returning to their communities equipped with faith and knowledge.
