Ferris State AI Program Validated by NSA
Ferris State University's Artificial Intelligence program has received validation in Secure Artificial Intelligence from the National Security Agency. This distinction acknowledges the high quality of the program, which is designed to meet the growing need for professionals with skills in both artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. The AI program at Ferris State, created through collaboration with industry leaders and with support from the U.S. Department of War, was the second Bachelor of Science program of its kind in the United States.
National Recognition for Cybersecurity Education
Renae Weathers, the NAS’s National CAE program manager, stated that the Ferris State program is helping to alleviate the critical shortage of cybersecurity professionals. She also emphasized the importance of higher education in protecting America's cyberspace. In a letter to Ferris State President Bill Pink, Weathers affirmed that a skilled cybersecurity workforce is a key strategic advantage for national security. She added that the U.S. government will continue its investment in programs that cultivate domestic talent. Weathers also noted the program's ability to meet the increasing demands, which contributes to the protection of national infrastructure.
Program Leadership and Impact
Dr. Greg Gogolin, who oversees the university’s Artificial Intelligence/Information Security & Intelligence program, said the NSA validation demonstrates the program's quality and relevance while preparing students for impactful careers. According to Gogolin, the Secure AI designation highlights Ferris State’s leadership within this rapidly changing field. He noted the transformative impact of artificial intelligence, stating that the program prepares students for careers across the public and private sectors, enabling them to lead in the secure, ethical, and appropriate application of AI technology.
Curriculum and Hands-On Experience
Students in the Artificial Intelligence bachelor's program at Ferris State focus on the design and deployment of effective, ethical, and robust AI solutions for real-world challenges. The program incorporates technologies, such as machine learning, deep learning, and autonomous agents, with cybersecurity considerations. Students gain hands-on experience in a secured AI lab, utilizing high-end NVIDIA GPU clusters for intensive practical application.
