Google Invests in Taiwan Water Stewardship

Google has announced a $3 million investment in Taiwan's water stewardship initiatives, aiming to improve water quality and support sustainable development in the region. The tech giant is collaborating with the Hsinchu City Government and Taiwan's Ministry of Environment to address severe pollution in the Xipuzi drainage, a critical water source for the Touqian River.
The Xipuzi drainage, which feeds into the Touqian River, has been classified as severely polluted due to untreated domestic wastewater. This pollution significantly reduces the available water supply, impacting both local ecosystems and public health. Google's investment will fund a gravel contact oxidation process (GCOP) facility, projected to treat over 450 million gallons of water annually over the next decade.
Improving Water Quality in Taiwan
The GCOP facility uses gravel as a natural filter to remove pollutants from water, fostering the growth of biofilm that breaks down harmful substances. This ecological treatment system is expected to enhance water quality in the Xipuzi drainage, benefiting aquatic habitats and reducing exposure to pathogens for nearby communities. By improving water quality in the Touqian River, the project aims to strengthen the overall health and resilience of the watershed, supporting water security across Taiwan.

Responsible Water Use and Sustainable Practices
In addition to funding the GCOP facility, Google is focused on responsible water use in its operations. The company's data center in Changhua County has been using non-potable industrial water for cooling since 2022, demonstrating a commitment to conserving freshwater resources. Furthermore, Google has partnered with N-Drip to install precision drip irrigation systems on rice fields in Changhua County, replacing traditional flood irrigation methods.
The gravity-powered drip irrigation system is designed to reduce agricultural water demand, enabling farmers to save water while maintaining crop yields. This project aligns with Google's broader sustainability goals, which include advancing clean energy in Taiwan through agreements in offshore wind, geothermal, and solar energy.

Google's initiatives in Hsinchu City and Changhua County reflect the company's dedication to supporting Taiwan's sustainable future.
