Google Search Labs Introduces Agentic AI

Google Search Labs is running a new experiment that incorporates Agentic features in AI Mode. This addition enables Google to assist users with tasks like securing restaurant reservations and will soon include booking appointments for local services, as well as event tickets.

Availability

This new feature is available to users in the US who are logged in to their Google accounts. Users can opt-in to explore the features. Google Search's AI Mode now offers agentic capabilities designed to aid with everyday local needs.

According to Google, the initial focus is on restaurant reservations, with plans to expand to local service appointments and event tickets soon. This functionality is currently accessible in the US, in English, to users aged 18 and over who are participating in Google Search Labs. To fully utilize the experience, users must be logged into a personal Google Account and have Web & App Activity enabled.

Robby Stein, VP, Product at Google Search, shared his excitement about expanding access, noting that Agentic features in AI Mode for restaurant reservations are now available to all users in the U.S. who have opted into Labs. He suggests trying it out, for example, by searching for a dinner reservation for a specific number of people, date, time, and location, with a preference for a certain type of cuisine. AI Mode will then search various reservation platforms and websites to identify real-time availability at restaurants that match the specified criteria, such as location, cuisine, or group size. The AI Mode presents a curated list of restaurants with available reservation slots, linking directly to the booking page to finalize the reservation.

What to expect

Expect Google's AI Mode to handle the research, providing direct links to booking pages to streamline reservations.

Why this matters

This update indicates Google's direction with AI Mode, aiming to allow users to complete tasks within Google Search. Agentic experiences will play a significant role in the future, from reservations and oil changes to event tickets. Businesses should prepare their websites for this shift.
