Google’s Project Green Light Expands
Project Green Light, the Google Research initiative using AI to lower traffic emissions, has expanded to 114 intersections in Boston.
This technology leverages AI, along with Google Maps driving trends, to model traffic patterns. It then suggests ways to optimize current traffic light timings.
Optimizing Traffic Flow
City engineers can implement these recommendations in about five minutes using the infrastructure already in place.
By coordinating traffic lights across adjacent intersections to form green waves, cities are able to improve traffic flow and cut down on stop-and-go emissions.
Project Green Light Details
Green Light, which launched in 2023, is currently active in 18 cities across four continents.
Initial data suggests the system could reduce traffic stops by up to 30% and lower emissions at intersections by up to 10%.
The Google Research team is focused on bringing this technology to more cities to improve lives globally.
