India’s First XR Device Hub: QWR and Kaynes Partner for AR/VR Innovation

India is making a significant stride in extended reality (XR) technology with the launch of its first integrated manufacturing hub for AR/VR devices. This initiative, a collaboration between QWR Interactive Solutions and Kaynes Technology India Limited, aims to boost domestic manufacturing, reduce import reliance, and create over 1,000 skilled jobs by 2027.

The new facility, located near Mysore, will focus on producing advanced AR/VR headsets and smart glasses. By localizing up to 85% of production, the partnership seeks to build a self-sufficient ecosystem for XR technology in India.

The Manufacturing Hub: A Strategic Initiative

QWR Interactive Solutions, known for its expertise in XR and AI wearables, will act as the design house and original design manufacturer. The company will bring its intellectual property, product designs, and calibration protocols to the project. Suraj Aiar, CEO of QWR, emphasized the importance of establishing deep-tech infrastructure to drive innovation.

Kaynes Technology, a leading player in AI and XR hardware, will contribute its manufacturing capabilities. Himanshu Verma, head of AI XR business at Kaynes, highlighted the opportunity to build world-class hardware in India while training a new generation of engineers and technicians.

Facility Details and Localization Plans

The manufacturing hub will feature a state-of-the-art waveguide factory with high cleanroom standards. It will also include units for assembly, testing, marking, and packaging. QWR aims to increase localization from 25% to 80–85% over the next 16 months through technology transfer.

This localization effort is expected to reduce India’s dependence on imports by up to 50%. By focusing on domestic production, the partnership aims to create a sustainable and competitive XR manufacturing ecosystem.

Future Applications and Expansion

The initial focus will be on AR/VR headsets, with plans to expand into AI-powered smart glasses for various sectors, including defense, education, enterprise training, and industrial applications. This expansion is expected to strengthen India’s position in global innovation and exports.

The collaboration between QWR and Kaynes marks a significant step toward establishing India as a global leader in XR technology. By combining their strengths, the companies aim to drive innovation, create jobs, and reduce dependency on foreign imports.
