Kazakhstan’s Digital Ambitions Take Center Stage in Romania

Kazakhstan is rapidly advancing its digital transformation, positioning itself as a regional leader in artificial intelligence (AI). A recent roundtable in Bucharest showcased the nation’s ambitious strategy, highlighting its commitment to modernizing institutions and fostering global partnerships.

The event, hosted in collaboration with the Embassy of Kazakhstan to Romania, underscored President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s vision for a fully digital nation. Ambassador Ali Yerlik outlined key initiatives, including the creation of a Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development and the introduction of a Unified Digital Code within the next three years.

A Vision for Digital Leadership

Kazakhstan’s commitment to digital transformation is evident in its achievements. Currently, 92% of the country’s public services are digitalized, placing it among the global leaders in e-government. The Astana Hub, which hosts over 1,300 tech startups, serves as a testament to the nation’s innovative drive and growing tech ecosystem.

"Kazakhstan is not just aiming to keep up with the digital revolution; we are determined to lead it," said Ambassador Yerlik during the roundtable. The country’s rapid digitalization is supported by strategic partnerships, such as the $4.2 billion agreement with Wabtec, which aims to enhance global connectivity and innovation.

Global Connectivity and Sustainable Growth

Kazakhstan’s reforms extend beyond the digital sphere, encompassing political and economic initiatives for sustainable growth. The country’s strategic location makes it a key player in global connectivity, as exemplified by the China–Europe transport corridor and the Trans-Caspian Corridor, which link Central Asia to Europe.

Ambassador Yerlik also emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges, such as water scarcity, melting glaciers, and the Aral Sea crisis. He called for collective action and UN reform to tackle these pressing issues, stressing the need for global trust and collaboration.

Strengthening Ties with Romania

The roundtable also highlighted opportunities for collaboration between Romania and Kazakhstan in areas such as AI governance, cybersecurity, and sustainable development. Romanian experts discussed potential partnerships to enhance digital infrastructure and promote innovation in both countries.

The recent visit of a delegation from the Port of Constanța to Kazakhstan further underscored the growing logistical and trade links between the two nations. The signing of a cooperation memorandum marked a significant step in strengthening this partnership, paving the way for future joint initiatives.
