As concerns grow about children's safety online, Meta is rolling out new tools. These will give parents more oversight of their teen's interactions with AI chatbots.

New Chat Controls

Beginning early next year, parents can block one-on-one chats. These tools can cut off interactions with AI characters altogether.

Parents can also block specific chatbots they deem inappropriate. Meta will also provide insights into what teens discuss with AI, without revealing full conversations.

Platform-Wide Protections

Meta's AI assistant will remain available. It will offer helpful information and educational opportunities. Age-appropriate protections will be in place by default.

Instagram teen accounts now default to PG-13 content. Teens can’t change settings without parental permission. This ensures younger users see safer, age-appropriate content.

Industry Scrutiny

These changes follow criticism about potential harm to children on social platforms. Lawsuits allege AI chatbot interactions have even led to teen suicide.

A Common Sense Media study found that over 70% of teens use AI companions. Half of them use these tools regularly. This highlights the need for safety measures.

Skepticism Remains

Children's online advocacy groups are skeptical about Meta's motives. Fairplay's executive director, Josh Golin, suggests these moves aim to prevent unwanted legislation. They also aim to reassure concerned parents.
