Meta and Oakley Partner on AI Smart Glasses
Meta is growing its AI-powered eyewear selection through a partnership with Oakley. The new smart glasses, called Oakley Meta HSTN, were introduced on Friday and are designed for athletes and fans, according to Meta.
The full line will be available this summer, with prices starting at $399. Meta says the glasses are "built for life on the field, trail, or track, with everyday use cases" and are intended to "evolve sport and enhance performance."
Features and Technology
These high-tech frames are part of Meta's partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear brand Meta collaborated with to launch its first AI sunglasses with Ray-Ban. The Oakley Meta HSTN glasses include Oakley's style and Meta's technology, featuring small cameras for recording videos and Bluetooth speakers for listening to music and podcasts.
The smart glasses also enable users to send/receive texts and make calls. A personal AI assistant answers questions when prompted with "Hey Meta."
Marketing
In a teaser video, former NBA player J.R. Smith is shown using the glasses while playing golf, asking, "Hey Meta, how strong is the wind today?" Meta AI responds that the wind is blowing 12 mph from the northwest.
Meta is using sports figures to promote the glasses to athletes. The advertising campaign will feature World Cup winner Kylian Mbappé and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, according to Meta.
