If successful, this device could achieve the same level of ubiquity as smartphones. However, such large-scale projects require substantial funding, which OpenAI currently lacks. The company has reportedly informed investors of an expected $44 billion loss before reaching profitability, making advertising a critical component of its long-term strategy.

"Advertising could become a key part of OpenAI’s business model," said Matt Garbutt, director of AI and creative at Brave Bison. "With the scale of ChatGPT and the upcoming AI companion device, subscriptions alone won’t cover the costs. Ad revenue is almost inevitable."

Currently, only about 4% of ChatGPT’s 500 million weekly users are subscribers. The remaining 96% could be exposed to advertisements, exchanging their attention for access to the platform. This freemium model, where services are offered for free to attract users and later monetized through ads, has been successfully employed by other tech giants like Google and Facebook.

"Establishing a global ad business is no small feat," said Karsten Weide, principal and chief analyst at W Media Research. "It involves navigating various regulations, user behaviors, and market maturity levels. But if OpenAI succeeds, advertisers will flock to the platform."

Advertisers are increasingly seeking scaled platforms due to rising costs, regulations, and the opacity of dominant ad networks. OpenAI’s ecosystem offers reach, context, and inventory, making it an attractive option for brands looking to connect with users in meaningful ways.

The conversational nature of ChatGPT allows for innovative ad formats that blend seamlessly with user interactions. Chris Pearce, managing director and search specialist at Greenpark, suggested that ads could take the form of sponsored answers or product placements that align with user context. This approach would enhance the user experience rather than disrupting it with traditional banner ads.

"OpenAI’s ecosystem could transform search practices," said Matt Barash, chief commercial officer at Nova. "We can expect native integrations that prioritize user experience and partner quality, along with new ad formats and targeting methods."

Recently, OpenAI decided against allowing users to shop directly from ChatGPT search results. Instead, the platform provides personalized recommendations, product details, price comparisons, and reviews with direct links to merchant sites. While these results are currently earned rather than bought, this approach lays the groundwork for a potential affiliate model or more integrated advertising strategies in the future.

"ChatGPT’s entry into shopping is disrupting the traditional sales funnel," said Nina Goli, head of digital strategy at Modern Citizens. "AI is changing how people find and buy products, turning the platform into a conversation rather than a storefront."
