OpenXR and AndroidXR Push Cross-Platform XR Forward
The Khronos Group’s OpenXR framework and Google’s AndroidXR operating system are leading the charge in standardizing cross-platform XR development. Recent updates to OpenXR introduce Spatial Entities Extensions, enhancing interoperability across XR devices, while AndroidXR expands its ecosystem through industry collaborations.

OpenXR Framework Updates
The Khronos OpenXR Working Group has released updates to its OpenXR framework, focusing on standardizing spatial computing features. The new Spatial Entities Extensions, now available for public review, enable consistent cross-platform support for detecting and tracking planes, markers, and spatial anchors. These extensions allow developers to create XR experiences that interact seamlessly with the user’s physical environment.
"The Spatial Entities Extensions are a significant step toward unifying XR development," said a Khronos Group spokesperson. "By reducing the need for device-specific code, developers can now focus on creating immersive content that works across multiple platforms."
PICO, a leading XR hardware manufacturer, contributed to the design of these extensions and is among the first to implement runtime support. The updates also introduce cross-session persistence, ensuring that virtual content remains anchored in the real world across different XR sessions.
AndroidXR Developments
Google’s AndroidXR OS is emerging as a key player in the XR industry, providing a framework for XR applications and hardware. Introduced late last year, AndroidXR supports both existing mobile apps and content specifically designed for XR devices. The OS is currently in a developer preview stage, with a wider release expected in the future.
Google is collaborating with Samsung and Qualcomm to develop new AI-powered use cases for XR devices, including the upcoming Samsung Moohan headset. The Moohan, expected to launch later this year, is part of a broader initiative to integrate immersive technologies with AI capabilities.
