Qualcomm Expands AI Research in Vietnam
Qualcomm has officially opened a new AI research and development center in Vietnam. The center is staffed by scientists, researchers, and AI specialists in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and it is part of Qualcomm’s global AI research group.
Focus on Generative and Agentic AI
The new center will focus on developing generative AI and agentic AI solutions. These solutions will have applications for smartphones, personal computers, extended reality (XR), automotive technology, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Enhancing Vietnam-US Tech Cooperation
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Xuan Dinh said the launch was a step forward in technology cooperation between Vietnam and the US. He stated it shows Qualcomm’s confidence in Vietnam's IT workforce and the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Le Xuan Dinh believes the center will improve Vietnam’s AI research capabilities and help train AI experts and engineers. It should also support Vietnam’s socio-economic development.
Alignment with Vietnam's Strategies
According to Thieu Phuong Nam, Qualcomm’s activities in Vietnam align with the country’s strategies for AI, semiconductors, and digital transformation. The focus is on technology transfer, ecosystem development, and capacity building.
Qualcomm hopes to speed up the development of energy-efficient AI solutions. They also want to strengthen Vietnam’s role in global innovation, by combining Vietnam’s talent with Qualcomm’s expertise, according to Nam.
Qualcomm's Presence in Vietnam
Qualcomm has two representative offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Its first R&D Center in Southeast Asia was launched in Hanoi in 2020. Qualcomm also runs the Qualcomm Vietnam Innovation Challenge to support local tech startups with financial, technical, business and intellectual property assistance.
Vietnam's AI Ambitions
Under Resolution 57-NQ/TW, Vietnam aims to be a top country in Southeast Asia for AI research and development by 2030. Vietnam’s location, policies, and resources are attracting investment from global tech firms.
