Qualcomm has launched a new AI R&D center in Vietnam. The facility includes scientists, researchers, and AI specialists in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is part of Qualcomm’s global AI research group. It will focus on generative AI and agentic AI solutions for smartphones, personal computers, extended reality (XR), automotive technology, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
At the launch, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Xuan Dinh said the center is a step forward in technology cooperation between Vietnam and the U.S. He added that it shows Qualcomm’s confidence in Vietnam’s IT workforce and deepens the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Dinh believes the center will improve Vietnam’s AI research capabilities, help train AI experts and engineers, and support the country’s socio-economic development.
Qualcomm Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos Country Director Thieu Phuong Nam stated that Qualcomm’s activities in Vietnam align with the country’s strategies on AI, semiconductors, and digital transformation, focusing on technology transfer, ecosystem development, and capacity building. By combining Vietnam’s talent with Qualcomm’s global scale and expertise, the company aims to develop advanced, energy-efficient AI solutions and strengthen Vietnam’s role in the global innovation value chain, Nam said.
Qualcomm has two representative offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, along with its first Southeast Asia R&D Centre, launched in Hanoi in 2020. The company also runs the Qualcomm Vietnam Innovation Challenge, an annual program supporting local tech startups through financial, technical, business and intellectual property assistance.
Vietnam aims to be among the top three countries in Southeast Asia for AI research and development by 2030, as stated in Resolution 57-NQ/TW issued on Dec. 22, 2024. Vietnam is attracting investment from global tech firms due to its location, policies, and resources.
