Gemini AI Demonstrates Website Creation Capabilities
Gemini AI recently showcased its website creation abilities in a test focused on generating a site about Android's history. The experiment highlighted Gemini's potential to assist users, even those with limited coding skills, in building functional websites.
The test coincided with the 20th anniversary of Google's acquisition of Android, as noted by Shruti Shekar, Editor-in-Chief of Android Central. Gemini was tasked with creating a website about Android's history, with the results compared across different Gemini models and other AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude.
Models Compared in the Test
The comparison included Gemini 2.5 Pro, Gemini 2.5 Flash Preview, ChatGPT, and Claude 4 Sonnet. All tests were conducted within Chrome browser tabs on a desktop PC, ensuring a consistent environment without relying on local tools like LM Studio.
Initial Prompt and Results
The initial prompt was straightforward: "Create a website about the history of Android." Gemini 2.5 Pro quickly generated code for a single-page website, providing a preview and explaining its process and the frameworks used. Gemini 2.5 Flash Preview, operating within AI Studio, offered a coding studio-like dashboard where code generation could be observed in real-time.
During the process, an error occurred, but Gemini self-corrected the code using the "Auto-fix" button, resulting in a single-page timeline. ChatGPT took approximately 40 seconds to structure the website, creating a single HTML page with a timeline view, though it required a manual click of a "Preview" button to view the site.
Claude 4 Sonnet also produced a single landing page with a timeline but added sections for "Android by the Numbers" and "Major Android Versions," including key features for each release. All models produced basic, static single-page designs.
Deeper Dive with More Complex Prompts
To explore more detailed results, a more complex prompt was created and given to all four models. Gemini essentially repeated the prompt, while ChatGPT added an HTML snippet. Claude provided detailed information and shortcuts to jump between sections on its single page.
Gemini 2.5 Flash Preview created a more in-depth, multi-page website after multiple error fixes. While the stock images were not ideal, the result aligned more closely with the project's initial vision. However, these websites still require hosting, a domain, and fact-checking before going live.
Implications for AI in Website Creation
The test highlights the growing potential of AI in website creation, particularly for users with limited coding skills. While the results are promising, the need for manual intervention and error correction remains a challenge. As AI tools like Gemini continue to evolve, they could become invaluable in streamlining web development processes.
"This test showcases the advancements in AI-driven website creation," said Shruti Shekar, EIC of Android Central. "While there are still areas for improvement, the ability of AI to generate functional code is a significant step forward."
Overall, Gemini's performance in this test underscores its capabilities in website creation, positioning it as a strong contender among AI tools in the web development space.
