XRlabs is pushing the boundaries of surgical technology by integrating NVIDIA's advanced AI and automation tools into surgical scopes. This innovative approach aims to enhance surgical precision, decision-making, and workflow efficiency, marking a significant step forward in the integration of AI in healthcare.
The company is leveraging NVIDIA Jetson Thor for low-latency, on-device perception from surgical video, enabling real-time AI analysis and vision-based tool tracking. Additionally, XRlabs is using NVIDIA Isaac for Healthcare as its sim-to-real development framework, with NVIDIA Holoscan on NVIDIA Jetson Thor as the physical AI stack for healthcare robotics. This combination allows XRlabs to develop intent-aware automation features, such as context-responsive framing and workflow-aware assistance, while preserving established OR setups and surgeon preferences.
Enhancing Surgical Precision with AI
XRlabs' goal is to transform live intraoperative video feeds into intelligent interfaces that enhance decision-making and support surgical teams during critical moments. By combining real-time perception with tool awareness, XRlabs is developing features that provide context-responsive framing and workflow-aware assistance. This approach ensures that surgical teams can operate more efficiently without disrupting established workflows or surgeon preferences.
The SurgicalOS software platform, designed as a modular "retrofit" layer, integrates with existing scopes and workflows. This enables hospitals and OEMs to add AI capabilities without replacing installed systems, making the technology more accessible and cost-effective.
Clinical Evaluation and Future Prospects
While the XRlabs system is still under development and not yet commercially available, the company is conducting early-stage clinical evaluations, including initial use in neurosurgery. These evaluations are being carried out in collaboration with clinicians under appropriate oversight, ensuring that the technology meets the highest standards of safety and effectiveness.
Dr. Ali Haddad, Founder and CEO of XRlabs and a practicing neurosurgeon, emphasized the significance of this technology: "Surgery generates exceptional video and instrument data, yet very little of it becomes real-time intelligence at the point of care. Using Jetson Thor and Isaac for Healthcare, we bring a simulation-first mindset to medtech, bridging the sim-to-real gap while enabling low-latency edge perception, robust tool tracking, and controlled automation on surgical scopes that fits real OR workflows."
XRlabs' mission to make surgical excellence borderless by delivering intelligent, integrated solutions across the surgical journey is a testament to their commitment to advancing healthcare through innovation. As the technology continues to evolve, it has the potential to revolutionize surgical practices and improve patient outcomes on a global scale.
