Google has expanded into film and TV production with 100 Zeroes, a production outpost in partnership with Range. One of their initial projects is with filmmaker Doug Liman (Road House).
Liman is collaborating with Google to produce an “immersive spatial film,” according to Neil Parris, Head of Filmmaker Partnerships at Google, during a discussion in Cannes with Elvis Mitchell.
The project will be available on Asteroid, Google’s upcoming XR app. Parris described Liman’s film as an “original 180° immersive short film.”
The film is an action thriller about strangers who take a rocket to mine an asteroid for wealth, Parris said. After the film, the audience can engage with the story through a call from an AI-powered character left on the asteroid.
The film will be available later this year, following the release of Project Moohan, a new XR headset from Samsung and Google.
Parris mentioned that Google has been building relationships with filmmakers. 100 Zeros is meant to help Google connect with filmmakers, enabling them across multiple avenues, he said.
Parris was accompanied by Range CEO Peter Micelli and filmmaker Sean Douglas. Douglas has written a short project for the Google x Range: AI On Screen initiative. This program commissions short films that explore the relationship between humanity and AI.
Micelli said that Range and Google intended for artists to participate and start a dialogue. He added that the goal is to discover what artists think will happen next with AI.
Google and Range have stated that 100 Zeroes will develop, finance, and produce projects across film, scripted and non-scripted TV, and audio. The company posted on X that its goal was to “assist the creative community in integrating cutting-edge technologies and platforms, like XR and AI, into their filmmaking.”
