OpenAI Plans 'Ambient Computer Layer'

OpenAI reportedly sees potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to go beyond web browsers and mobile apps. According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Thursday (May 29), Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap stated that OpenAI wants to create an “ambient computer layer” that does not require screens.

Lightcap, speaking at WSJ’sFuture of Everythingevent, said OpenAI is aiming for “truly personal” AI and that he doesn't know what CEO Sam Altman is working on with Jony Ive, a former Apple designer. OpenAI is acquiring Ive’s company, io.

Acquisition of io

PYMNTS reported on May 21 that io, an AI device startup created in the spring of 2024 with Apple designers Scott Cannon, Evans HankeyandTang Tan, is being acquired by OpenAI for just under $6.5 billion. Io will become OpenAI's devices division, led by Peter Welinder, who will report to Altman.

Altman stated that there is a better way to access AI than turning on a computer, opening a browser, visiting ChatGPT, typing a query, and waiting for a response. Altman said that there is an opportunity to reimagine using a computer. Io is expected to present “what they’ve been working on” in 2026.

In October 2023, it was reported that Altman was interested in a hardware project for a more natural AI interaction and planned to collaborate with Ive, who designed the iPhone and other tech products. The report noted the iPhone and App Store's impact on smartphones, business, and pricing models.

Additional Updates

Lightcap mentioned at the WSJ event that OpenAI now has 3 million enterprise customers, up from 2 million in February, according to the WSJ report. He also said OpenAI is collaborating with theCalifornia State UniversitySystem to help it become the first AI-powered university system.
